5 of the Best Songs of 2019 So Far

So far, 2019 has been a truly interesting year in music. Curiously, the typical A-listers are not the ones dominating the best songs and albums lists this time around.
We have seen newcomers come up with great sounds and indie talents finally enchanting the bigger audience. These are five of the absolute best songs from the first half of 2019.
Cellophane – FKA Twigs
On Cellophane, FKA Twigs achieves something rare, but that is always transcending when it happens. She makes her cries of pain, defeat and surrender sound beautiful.
The song and the emotions progress alongside each other, making for a powerful experience of not only listening, but self-reflection.
Rylan – The National
Rylan has been a fan-favorite from The National for quite a long time. But only in 2019, has it received its much-deserved studio recorded version.
On Rylan, the mid-tempo of the track offers the perfect background for the simultaneously profound and child-like lyrics, that reflect on the inside of our beings as a world populated with kids nurturing expectations.
Seventeen – Sharon Van Etten
Seventeen is an anthemic rock-infused track that provides the setting for Sharon Van Etten to look back on her teenage years with melancholy and warmth. Usually, the artist opts for ballad-y, singer-songwriter-type productions. But on Seventeen, the rousing sound represents a statement.
This Life – Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend are known to be a band which intention is to always switch it up from album to album. That is, once again, proven on their latest LP Father of the Bride, one of the group’s very best.
However, the best track is arguably the one which sees the band staying closest to their most familiar, early-days sound. We’re talking about This Life, a masterful, bright, sturdy and summer-inspired jam.
Want You in My Room – Carly Rae Jepsen
Jack Antonoff has been a frequent collaborator of the trio of ladies we can always count on to deliver great pop music: Lorde, Taylor Swift and [Carly Rae Jepsen](https://www.cbc.ca/music/find-out-who-made-the-2019-polaris-music-prize-long-list-1.5182683). It’s no wonder that when the producer joined forces once again with Jepsen, to work on her album Dedicated, all that came out were bops.
Want You in My Room is a stand-out. It takes the listener back to the golden ages of pop, while addressing love and relationships with a truly modern, bright, cinematic and lustful flair.
Believe us when we tell you that, as soon as you discover these five gems, you will want to add them to your daily playlist.
